How much does a carbon offset cost and what is the CO2 benefit?
For just $4, each offset balances the effect of 1,000* pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) on the atmosphere. For Carolinas residents, 1,000 pounds of CO2 is equivalent to 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy use. The average Duke Energy residential customer in the Carolinas uses 1,000 kWh of energy per month. So for $4 per month (or one carbon offset), you could offset your home’s monthly energy use and carbon emissions.
*Increase from 500 pounds effective Aug. 1, 2011.
